Oyster cards
These are a great way of using public transport in London. Tube fares are max £1.50 (as opposed to c.£4 for some) and all buses are 80p. Also, you "buy" singles with the money from your card, until you reach £4.90 and then it functions as a travelcard for the rest of the day, but cheaper than a full price travelcard, and you didn't have to have decided in the morning whether it was worth getting one or not. You buy the card (£3) and then "top it up" with money, which you can also do on the web the night before you travel etc. I was a little bit (!?) confused about how these worked from reading about them on the web before we got there, but they're great and I recommend them to anyone; fast, convenient and great value for money. We also got to feel like real Londoners!
